ATP – Auckland > Gaël Monfils' comeback: “It's not pretty, but you have to put the ball in”

Led 1–6, 2–5 by Pedro Martinez (43^e world) in the first round of the ATP 250 in Auckland, New Zealand, Gaël Monfils managed to turn the match around to win in 2h21 of play: 1–6, 7–6(5), 6–3.

“I’ve been on the circuit for over 20 years. I've taken 6–1 many times. I have experience in this field. Have confidence in yourself. It wasn't great Tennis at first. Try at each point. It's not pretty, but you have to put the ball in there. At some point, things get better. You have to know how to seize the opportunity”explained the 38-year-old Frenchman, still 52^e world, after the meeting.

In the round of 16, Monfils will face the German Jan‐Lennard Struff (42^e).
