Winner in two straight sets from the Russian, the Italian continues his faultless run in the “masters tournament”.
Imperial. World No.1 Jannik Sinner scored a third victory on Thursday against Russian Daniil Medvedev (4th) (6-3, 6-4) in as many group matches played at the ATP Masters, a success which allowed the American Taylor Fritz to also reach the semi-finals.
Already assured since Thursday afternoon of participating in the final four of the “masters tournament”, Sinner, 23, finished in first place in his group with a record of three victories, six sets won and none lost. Medvedev had to beat Sinner in straight sets to beat Fritz, earlier winner of Australian Alex De Minaur 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
But against Sinner who had won seven of their last eight confrontations, the Russian only had any illusions for a full quarter of an hour. Multiplying unforced errors (17 in the first set for four winning shots), he lost his serve in the seventh game and did not recover. In the second set, the Italian quickly took his opponent's serve to lead 3-1, the advantage immediately lost. At 4-4, Sinner made the difference again, this time definitively.
In the semi-finals on Saturday, the big redhead, unfortunate finalist of the 2023 edition of the ATP Masters, will face the 2nd in the group “John Newcombe” whose outcome will be decided on Friday. Fritz will be pitted against the winner of this group.
The German Alexander Zverev is on a favorable waiver with two victories in two matches, before facing the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (one victory, one defeat). The Norwegian Casper Ruud, opposed to the Russian Andrey Rublev (two defeats), also won a match.
