ESET security researchers recommend that Windows 10 users quickly upgrade to Windows 11. According to experts, it is important to update the operating system to avoid a real “security fiasco”.
ESET's recommendation comes a few months before the end of software support for Windows 10, announced for October 2025. After ten years of good and loyal service, the operating system is preparing to bow out. As of October 14, 2025, the OS will no longer receive security updates. Microsoft, however, offers users the opportunity to obtain an additional year of software support by returning to checkout. This is billed at $30 to individuals.

Cyber attacks and data loss
As Thorsten Urbanski, security expert at ESET, explains, it is advisable to “All users not to wait until October and upgrade to Windows 11 now, or choose another operating system if their device cannot be updated to the latest version of Windows”.
People who persist in staying on Windows 10 “risk serious security issues and make themselves vulnerable to dangerous cyberattacks and data loss”. Deprived of security updates, the operating system risks quickly finding itself in the crosshairs of cybercriminals. They will probably seek to exploit new vulnerabilities discovered in the OS code, and which will not be corrected by Microsoft. This is why computers running Windows 10 will become ideal targets for hackers.
Companies that leave “these devices continue to operate” are guilty of “gross negligence”underlines the expert. THE “obsolete systems” like Windows 10 “can become the starting point for data loss, espionage or ransomware attacks”.

A difficult transition and pirates in ambush
Despite its imminent death, Windows 10 began to regain market share. According to Statcounter data, Windows 10 still has 61.83% market share, while Windows 11 has 34.94%. According to ESET, “the situation is even more dangerous than when Windows 7 support ended in early 2020”. Before Windows 7 software support ends, “only 20% of users were still using Windows 7, while more than 70% had already adopted Windows 10”.
“Today, the situation is extremely worrying: cybercriminals are perfectly aware of these figures and are only waiting for the end of support to attack”estimates Thorsten Urbanski.
It must be said that Microsoft has not not simplifying things for users looking to migrate from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The publisher did not wish to make the slightest concession on the minimum requirements for the installation of its most recent operating system. You must have a computer with a TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) chip. If this is not your case, Microsoft invites you to buy a new PC. It is also possible to turn to an alternative operating system, such as Linux.
