If the sky in your corner of Brittany was not too cloudy, you may also have noticed it when you looked up: the conjunction of Venus and the moon! On the night of Friday January 3 to Saturday January 4, 2025, the moon had an appointment with Venus, planet also known as the Shepherd’s Star. This phenomenon is not so rare, since it occurs approximately every 18 months, but the spectacle remains guaranteed for all astronomy lovers. This conjunction defines the moment when the two stars find themselves aligned in the same field of vision. In the Bigouden country, here in the sky of Combrit-Sainte-Marine, their brightness dominated the twilight, Friday January 3, 2025, when the sun had just set. A beautiful spectacle that several witnesses have immortalized in Brittany, as in France. Astronomers are awaiting another similar phenomenon which must occur during the night of this Saturday January 4 to Sunday January 5, 2025: the “disappearance” of the planet Saturn behind the moon. A rarer astronomical event, as it only occurs approximately every 15 years.
