From the treatment of obesity to that of Alzheimer’s, GLP-1 causes excitement, without much perspective
Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro… These new drugs have generated enthusiasm among patients suffering from diabetes and obesity, two indications for which marketing has been authorized. The clinical results of what we call “GLP-1 analogues” (glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone) indeed seem very promising for treating obesity.
But this excitement does not stop there and data on the supposed virtues of this new class of drugs in other pathologies have multiplied. Observational studies highlight beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk, kidney failure, and even alcohol addiction. And if we are still far from having found the drug capable of curing Alzheimer’s disease, GLP-1 analogues could also slow down cognitive decline, perhaps because of their anti-inflammatory effect.
