As part of the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, Herman Hulst took part in an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu. A very interesting exchange during which the co-CEO of PlayStation discussed the possible return of major licenses, but also the company’s strategy regarding consoles and new media. For Hulst, it’s very simple, PlayStation is investing heavily in consoles, but is also making PC players a priority target in the years to come.
The future of PlayStation on PC and consoles?
If for many years PlayStation defended its policy of exclusives and was very reluctant to port its games to other media, it seems that the trend is reversing in recent months . More and more exclusive games are starting to come out on PC, with most recently God of War Ragnarök and from April The Last Of Us Part II Remastered.
According to the latest rumors, Sony is even considering leaving LEGO Horizon Adventures on Xbox from the start of 2025, a few weeks after its release on PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. A strategy similar to that of Microsoft which intends to put an end to exclusives and which is clearly capitalizing on its Game Pass and Cloud Gaming.
For its part, PlayStation don’t plan to do the same. Although the company is opening up to new possibilities, the priority will remain consoles and PC gamers as Herman Hulst explains: “While consoles remain our core business, expanding to platforms like PC will allow us to bring our games to more people […] Live service titles will be released on multiple platforms. For other titles, we study and decide on the policy based on the sales format that best suits the players and the company.”
Thus, there is a good chance thatHelldivers II and all multiplayer service games can arrive quite quickly on PC and even other supports. On the other hand, Sony reserves the right to study on a case-by-case basis the porting of other games and in particular single-player titles. It is certain that PlayStation will not opt for an aggressive strategy by releasing the games at the same time on PS5 and PC. On the other hand, waiting times could decrease. The proof with The Last of Us Part II Remastered which will arrive on PC only one year and three months after its release on PS5.
