The days pass and the release of GTA 6 gets closer. If it is certain that it will overwhelm the world of video games upon its release, it will very quickly be compared to GTA 5. The fifth numbered episode of the Grand Theft Auto series displays a colossal sales figure, which even the boss of Rockstar’s parent company didn’t see it coming.

GTA 6 is officially considered the most anticipated game of 2025. A title that it has held since December 12 with the Game Awards. During this ceremony sometimes called the “Oscars” of video games, the sixth numbered part of Grand Theft Auto was in competition with Monster Hunter Wilds, Death Stranding 2, Metroid Prime 4 and Ghost of Yotei. If we don’t have the details of the votes, it’s a safe bet that GTA 6 came out of it dominating the fray. It must be said that GTA V has sold more than 200 million copies! A figure that even the CEO of Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, didn’t see coming. In an interview with Conner Mather, Strauss Zelnick states:

We never envisioned selling 205 million units. This goes far beyond what we could have imagined.

A sufficiently colossal figure that only one game has managed to surpass. Minecraft even achieved the feat of having sold 100 million more copies than GTA 5 and exceeded the 300 million mark. The two titles are alone in the world since, in third position, comes Wii Sports (83 million) which was included (except in Japan) in the Wii’s starting pack. It is PUBG and Mario Kart 8 which are jostling next, with 75 million and 72 million units distributed respectively.

The throne for GTA 6?

Without a doubt, it is certain that the sales of GTA 6 will be watched very closely for the fall of a possible record. However, it is impossible to certify that he will do better than his predecessor.

First of all because 100 million additional units to sell is a colossal figure. The proof is since only two games in history have exceeded this figure. This would mean redoing, for GTA 5, half of what he did over the last ten years.

If players have to wait longer for the release of this new episode than for GTA 5, they were able to discover the latter on a much larger fleet of consoles in a short time. In fact, Grand Theft Auto 5 was first released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 then arrived on the higher generation of consoles a year later before arriving on PC in 2015. Of course, it is in a version optimized on PS5 and Xbox Series that it is marketed again in 2022.

These are therefore three generations of consoles which have welcomed GTA 5. For GTA 6 to be able to overtake its predecessor, in theory it would have to follow the same path and be available on as many media as possible. However, GTA 5 was able to benefit from the recent release of the PS4 / Xbox One at the time to maximize its sales. Something that will not be the case, at least when it comes to the PS5 / Xbox Series as well as the next generation of consoles. In fact, GTA 6 is currently planned for the end of 2025: a period straddling two generations of consoles. But of course, with GTA, you can never be sure of anything as the series continues to break records.
