Since September, a crane has been securely anchored in the former garden of the François-Truffaut college in Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx. It is the sign of a vigorous thermal renovation, an expansion of the refectory, the creation of a localized Unit for educational inclusion (Ulis) and the construction of a new building of 800 square meters on two floors with a scientific vocation.
The Landes Departmental Council had this project in 2019 before Covid and had to make a considerable financial effort to maintain it at the end of this period. In fact, the increase in the price of materials and the new standards in these educational establishments have brought this project to more than 6 million euros. The planets have aligned well so that this project, which has just started, will be completed in three years for the start of the 2027 school year.
The phasing of the work is planned as follows. First, the new building will be constructed to accommodate physical sciences, chemistry, technology and SVT (delivery planned for the end of 2025). Until then, during the school holidays in February 2025, bungalows will be installed in the courtyard which will serve as “relay classes”. Mr. Sabourin, the principal of the college, is delighted with this organization led by Mr. Cussol, the representative of the Departmental Council. Particular care will be taken to minimize noise pollution.
From 500 to 600 middle school students
Built in 1982, the structures are no longer suitable for effective insulation. The increase in energy costs combined with climate change made it urgent to carry out insulation work, equip the windows with double glazing and bring the ventilation system up to new standards.
All this work concerns the already existing building. The latter will see its refectory enlarged. The forecast number of students welcomed could increase from 500 to 600 middle school students. Then, it will be time to take back the courtyard, to green it and the ecodelegates already have 1,000 ideas to achieve this.
