The Magic Mouse’s charging port is the power button of the Mac mini M4 before its time. In fact, Apple’s mouse has had this design anomaly for 15 years now. Placed under the mouse, this connector simply prevents its use when the mouse is charging.
The only change made in all this time has been the switch from Lightning to USB-C at the end of 2024, and for that, we can thank a directive from the European Union. Through his latest Power On newsletter published this Sunday, December 15, Mark Gurman finally announced good news for this accessory.
The journalist from Bloomberg actually affirmed that Apple “seeks to design something that better fits the modern era”. This would be an opportunity to respond to criticism, particularly for the placement of the charging port or even ergonomics.
The apple company would like to “create something more relevant, while addressing long-standing complaints”specifies Mark Gurman. Enough to give hope to fans of the Magic Mouse, the one and only mouse marketed by Apple.
It remains to be seen how Apple will make these changes. 9to5Mac also dreams of a mouse similar to Logitech’s MX Master, an ergonomic format par excellence, but which would still be a long way from Apple’s thin and compact Magic Mouse.
In terms of the launch window, Mark Gurman is leaning towards a release within 12 to 18 months, which would bring us around 2026. A pivotal period for MacBooks, with the launch of the first Apple laptops with Oled screens.
