While NVIDIA has just experienced a huge drop in its stock price, a recent announcement could add to the problem. It hasn’t even been two years since ChatGPT was released, and OpenAI is already looking to break away from its reliance on Nvidia for AI GPUs. These AI graphics cards are among those that have contributed to the meteoric growth in Nvidia’s stock price in stock exchange.

Some analysts, however, have argued that the stock is overvalued, and others have pointed to disappointing sales prospects for this type of hardware. As a result, Nvidia’s stock price has plummeted, and the OpenAI and Rain AI deals may not help matters. Rain AI is a chipmaker backed by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI.

Former Apple Silicon Executive Joins Rain AI

OpenAI is now accelerating its ambition to get rid of Nvidia, thanks to the recent recruitment of a former head of Apple Silicon chips within Rain AI. This is Jean-Didier Allegrucci, who worked for seventeen years at Apple. He participated in the Apple Silicon chip revolution, helping the firm separate itself from Intel and AMD.

The veteran is now joining one of the most ambitious projects in the field. In its press release announcing the news, Rain AI quotes its CEO, William Passo, as saying:

We couldn’t be more excited to have a hardware leader of JD’s caliber overseeing our silicon efforts. Our new in-memory computing technology will help us unlock the true potential of today’s generative AI models by taking us one step closer to running the world’s fastest, cheapest, and most advanced AI models.

In total, he was at the heart of the development of more than 30 processors at Apple, whether for the Apple Watch, the iPhone, the iPad, or the Macs. He has been on all fronts, building a world-class development team, without whom this probably would not have been possible.
