It’s not new, to finish a game as quickly as possible, speedrunners often use techniques that are beyond understanding. Here is a good example, for a run that lasts 50 seconds.

Do you know Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals? It is a role-playing game released between 1995 and 1997 (depending on the territories) on Super Nintendo, developed by the Neverland studio (Rune Factory). A solid and unpretentious title which, according to our test at the time, does not equal the references of the genre but offers “choice arguments in order to have a pleasant time”. Brief, an RPG that is worth the detour and that requires between 25-30 hours to be completed or rather 50 short seconds if you are a speedrunner.

In less than a minute

Yes, as we are reminded DoctorSwellman in a YouTube video posted on June 19, it is possible to complete Lufia 2 in less than a minute: 51 seconds and 940 hundredths – to be precise… For 7 years, this record is held by the German player HappySquid89 on the US version of the game as you can see on the site speedrun.com. A version also known for its bugs of all kinds. There is one that allows you, from the start of the adventure, to “teleport” directly to the end.

A very, very buggy version

So: how does this magic trick work on the US version of Lufia 2? At the beginning of the game, as soon as you have control of your hero, go to the “Config” menu to tinker with a few things and activate what is called the “Config Glitch”. Exit the pause menu and return to the “Equip” section, and tomatoes…the RPG has lost your cursor (the thing that lets you navigate through the menus) and is instead placing it in the item section. At this point, the Lufia 2 code does not understand that items are missing in this locationwhich will have the effect of “corrupting” your character’s name! From there, just go see the merchant named Tia, and as soon as she mentions your name gone to shit, you won’t have two dialogue options, but 128 (yes). One of these options allows you to activate the game’s final cutscene, the one just before the end credits.
