iCloud says goodbye to old iOS

Do you like your old iPhone that still runs iOS 8? Bad news: Starting December 18, 2024, Apple will no longer allow devices running iOS 8 or lower to access iCloud Backup. And that’s not all: existing backups will simply be deleted.

Apple explains that this decision aims to “align with the minimum software configurations” for its services. In short, it’s time to evolve. If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch can accommodate iOS 9, now is the time to update it. For those who are still using an antediluvian device unable to upgrade, you will have to say goodbye to the simplicity of iCloud and go through manual backup.

To back up your data without iCloud, connect your device to a PC with iTunes, or to a Mac via Finder. A bit of an old school operation, certainly, but one that will save your precious photos and contacts.

A limited impact?

Rest assured, if you have an iPhone 4S, an iPad 2 or a 5th generation iPod touch, you can still install iOS 9. For users stuck with older models, the damage should be reduced: who is still using these dinosaurs on a daily basis? Apple marks the end of an era here, but for many, this announcement will go almost unnoticed. After all, relics belong in the museum… or in the souvenir drawer!
