Little beasts – This work by Microids puts insects in the spotlight. Making the player embody a living species is a challenge for developers

In the Pantheon of video game characters, we find Mario, Lara Croft, and now… the ants. The Tower Five studio released on November 7, with the publisher Microids, a strategy game around this animal, freely inspired by the book The Ants by Bernard Werber. At first glance, however, it is not easy to create a challenge from the life of an animal.

The Ants offers to play as an insect and lead your colony to prosperity. In fact, this translates into several real-time strategy missions. Despite the studio’s relative confidentiality, it has pulled out all the stops in the visual production of the game, with a very detailed rendering thanks to the Unreal Engine 5 which gives scale to the insect fights. The rest of the game alternates between tactical battles and more exploration-oriented missions, of varying quality.

“See the world through the eyes of an ant”

After a first game produced by Microids in the year 2000, the publisher collaborated with a French studio, Tower Five.
