Lenovo LOQ Gen 9 test: the entry-level “all-Intel” gaming PC that struggles to seduce

An entry-level gaming PC, the Lenovo LOQ Gen 9 15IAX9I doesn’t shine with its muscles. We thus find a Core i5-12450HX with eight cores, four of performance and four of energy saving, for a total of 12 threads. Although it is a processor dedicated to gamingit should be kept in mind that it houses a 2-year-old Core i5, still supported by 24 GB of RAM in our configuration.

Alongside it, it is therefore a dedicated graphics chip which takes its place, an entry-level A530M and Alchemist generation. It has 12 Xe cores and 12 computing units raytracing for a power consumption that oscillates between 65 and 95 W in theory. It has 4 GB of GDDR6 memory, which is the minimum that this card can offer.

Good CPU performance… from two years ago

To take the measure of this LOQ Gen 9, we compared its CPU index with those of a PC gaming equipped with a Core i7 of the same generation: the Acer Nitro 5, which also has the good idea of being equipped with a GeForce RTX 3060 from Nvidia. We then compared it to more recent machines, powered by Intel or AMD processors.

The logic is respected since, with its index of 143, the Core i5 of our LOQ does less well than the Core i7-12700H of its opponent Acer. The difference is mainly in the encoding speeds in HandBrake or Premiere. Compression tasks are also much slower. No mystery, it’s a Core i5 released in 2022, but in fact, the performance is completely acceptable.

SSD quite powerful, but a little short

To keep the price range low, Lenovo opted for a 512GB storage module. Once you remove the space needed for Windows and a few essential software, there is little more than 450GB of storage left. With titles like Call of Duty which easily exceed 100 GB, you risk quickly running out of space and juggling between installation and uninstallation. Damage.

Especially since the chosen module, without being a thunderbolt, holds up. Reading speeds rise to almost 4.3 GB/s, while writing speeds are just 1.8 GB/s. You will have to wait to move large files, but remember, you will not be able to store many of them.
