Microsoft has just announced good news for the management of security updates: the deployment in preliminary version of the hotpatch on Windows 365 and Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2. This technology, already proven since February 2022 on Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition, promises to revolutionize the maintenance of business systems.
The hotpatch could be a major step forward in installing security updates. This technology allowsapply patches in the background, without requiring a system restart. How ? By directly modifying the in-memory code of running processes.
« Hotpatch updates are targeted and provide a comprehensive set of security fixes for the operating system, without adding additional features », Specifies Microsoft. “ Their particularity lies in their immediate application after installation, guaranteeing rapid and focused protection ».

The update cycle now adopts a quarterly rhythm: in January, April, July and Octoberdevices will install a cumulative security update requiring a reboot. For the next two months, they will only receive hotpatch fixes that do not require a reboot. “ Devices remain secure and productive, with only four reboots per year instead of twelve, thanks to eight scheduled hotpatch updates », underlines Microsoft.
To benefit from this feature in preview, businesses must meet certain criteria : have a Microsoft subscription including Windows Enterprise E3 or E5, use devices running Windows 11 Enterprise version 24H2 (Build 26100.2033 or later), and have deployed Microsoft Intune.
Activation is done via a new quality update policy in Intune and Windows Autopatch, with the ability to enable or disable the automatic deployment of hotpatch updates. “ Good news, the quality update policy can automatically detect if your devices are hotpatch eligible », adds the company.
