Starting from the Californian shores of the United States, Wokism quickly arrived in Europe and reached Switzerland, which does not escape the intellectual drift that it represents. Woke means “awake” in popular African-American language. Awake to what? To the injustices of the everyday world, a world built on themes which, beneath their appearance of humanist generosity, are in fact powerful screens for sleeping citizens. Wokism aims to wake up the marmots.

It is not a unified current of thought, but a nebula of diverse minorities who do not agree on the goals to be achieved but on three fundamental axes:

1. Our democracies produce hidden oppression that is found everywhere, even in seemingly innocuous actions. It is therefore a question of clearly designating these supposed oppressions and implementing ideological surveillance behaviors.

2. The various identities are social constructions due to the power relations in which we are part. The best known challenge is gender theory. Developed in the United States by the philosopher Judith Butler, gender theory refutes the idea accepted for millennia according to which sexual identity is conditioned by biological sex. Sexual difference is a patriarchal myth whose aim is to maintain inequality by locking women into their reproductive role. The idea of complement between man and woman is a macho idea that urgently needs to be deconstructed.

3. The perspective of the oppressed is superior to that of others, because the oppressed have access to knowledge that others do not have: they know what it means to be a victim. He is therefore the chosen one. The tradition of rigorous study, of debate, of reasoned proof is denigrated. Remember the thunderous interruptions at conferences at the University of Geneva: “Your book is shit; we didn’t read it!” We are entering a cultural revisionism which revolves around the negation of objectivity. What matters is what we feel, and it is based on this personal feeling that things can be judged and condemned.

We are on the other side of the long relativistic and tolerant period that we have known since the 1960s; we have fallen into the clutches of a true dogmatic totalitarianism which is unfolding before our eyes. Initiate the hunt for males, white, heterosexual and rather elderly: this is the program. Undo logical tradition (cancel culture) and never debate, such is the accepted tendency.

Deciding whether it is a fashion or a powerful trend that marks a key stage in our decadence depends on one’s degree of indulgence. The fact remains that Wokism is a danger for freedom, for reason and for science.

We oscillate between “The Precious Ridiculous” and Trissotin. Undoubtedly one of the reasons why wokes want to rewrite Molière.
