If you are tempted by a flip smartphone, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is packed with qualities and manages to be as convincing as those offered by Samsung. Moreover, thanks to the sales, its price goes from 1,199 euros to 639 euros.

Motorola was the first to release a flip smartphone with a large external screen, before Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5. He managed to push the concept of the flip phone further, until it was just as interesting as the pioneer of this sector. It recently presented these two new foldable smartphones: the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and Razr 50. But, it is no less interesting to turn to the Razr 40 Ultra especially since it is displayed at less than 640 euros thanks to sales.

A design that rivals the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Before the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, there was the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. Motorola is not a pioneer in the foldable smartphone market, but its Razr 40 Ultra is the first model to adopt a large external screen as well as a waterdrop hinge that allows the smartphone to be completely closed and makes the imperceptible screen bending. It also benefits from exemplary finishes and finesse. All that was missing was a better certification than its IP52 and its design would have been perfect.

Inside, we find a 6.9-inch AMOLED panel in Full HD+ definition (2,640 x 1,080 pixels) and with an adaptive refresh rate of 1 to 165 Hz. We’re on heavy duty. But even more interesting is its external screen, this time it is a 3.6-inch pOLED panel and that is what makes this smartphone so interesting. With this diagonal, it is possible to do almost everything on this external screen: send a message, a tweet, take a look at Maps and even wait while launching a game. All without having to open your smartphone.

The same strengths, but also the same flaws as its rival

In terms of performance, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is based on a high-end SoC from 2022, which is a bit of a shame for a smartphone released in 2023. It is a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and given the power he is capable of deploying, there is nothing to complain about. During the two weeks of testing with him, we suffered no slowdown and Genshin Impact with max settings it easily ran at 45 FPS. In benchmarks, the Razr 40 Ultra is about as good as the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with the same chip.

Finally, if the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has the same strengths as its rival Galaxy Z Flip 5, it also has the same flaws, such as a camera that struggles to convince. The Razr 40 Ultra blames the absence of a telephoto lens but also the performance of its 12 Mpx main sensor and its 13 Mpx ultra wide-angle. There is no shortage of defects in sharpness and saturation, let’s not talk about night mode. As for the battery with a capacity of only 3,800 mAh, it can last the day, which is insufficient in this price range. It at least makes up for it with 30W fast charging which recharges in less than an hour.
