Our ultraportable gaming test with the Asus Rog Zephyrus G14

Due to overflowing gaming news from September 2023 to June 2024, it has been a long time since L’Indépendant had the opportunity to test a PC from the Asus brand which has already trusted us with its Rog Ally, its Rog Stryx G16, the Fold Oled and other goodies on which we were able to give our opinion. Used to testing all kinds of peripherals in our free time, we were delighted to see that this time the Taiwanese manufacturer offered us a PC that was both compact and gaming, also intended for all content creators. A look back at this little power monster called the Rog Zephyrus G14, equipped with a 14” Oled screen capable of offering a resolution slightly higher than 3K.

Packaging

With the Zephyrus, you will not be entitled to the most elaborate packaging in Asus history
Photo YL

We often say it with Asus, the discovery of a new machine in their range begins as soon as the packaging is opened. A constantly renewed pleasure since for each model, an effort is systematically made regarding its development.
Here, it is not the most beautiful packaging or even the most sophisticated that we have seen since with sobriety as the watchword, we find ourselves here facing what is most discreet in terms of gaming . Matte black featuring the Rog logo, that’s all!

Sobriety + efficiency

Inside, you will find two compartments, one is dedicated to the power supply and the second, directly to the laptop!
No customization accessories to report here, everything is done to be as simple as possible and without frills.

Design

We are far from the slightly bling-bling side of the other models in the range.

Entirely built with “Basalt gray” colored aluminum for its chassis and shell, the first impression that dominates after unboxing is that the Zephyrus G14 has a look that contrasts radically with other laptops from the Rog range.

Usually at Asus, we like the large stylized inscriptions all over the beast, the fully customizable multi-colored LEDs, here, we almost have the impression of taking in hand a MacBook from Apple, a feeling that we feel even when we underweigh the beast which weighs about 1.5kg.

The grip inspires confidence and solidity despite its light weight. The only fantasy of the Rog Zephyrus is a luminous diagonal stripe, a finely integrated engraving of the Asus gaming range logo and a Zephyrus inscription behind it that we had almost forgotten!

When opened, we find an 84-key backlit keyboard as well as a 15 cm diagonal trackpad. As always with the brand, this part of the laptop has been particularly well cared for with a good feeling during long-term use!

We have easy access to keyboard shortcuts such as sound, microphone on/off, keyboard and screen brightness management, turbo mode or various capture functions.

No usual big hinges like Asus Rog gaming PCs to support a 14” screen which includes a small 1080p webcam on the top.

Specs et performances

This is often the case with Asus hardware, it was a real pleasure to use the Zephyrus. Oriented towards the creation of content, we were able to first try it in image work with a photofilter. No bugs or slowdowns were reported despite the use of many large layers.

As for video editing on the other hand, in an extended office with the preview on the Zephyrus screen, we were treated to a few crashes in the editing software so that we were forced to switch the display to the PC alone to resolve the problem.

The game runs like a charm in this configuration

On the other hand, in terms of the behavior of the beast in a gaming configuration, we recorded very satisfactory performance.

On recent productions, the title offers good results with a resolution between 2 and 3K depending on the games. Obviously, the size of the beast has its downside. It heats up quite a bit and if you want to get the most out of your games in terms of rendering, it’s better to go down to 1080p for a result that will remain very good. Whether on Game Pass titles like the magnificent Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5 or the very recent Senua’s Saga Hellblade 2, you will be amazed by the Oled screen as you can see in the video captures. For the latest flagship title in the Microsoft catalog, apart from a few small artifacts in the background on a panorama, the experience was quite good.

On the Oled screen of the Zephyrus G14, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart looks magnificent

No problem getting the most out of the games!

To counterbalance, we also tested some productions from Steam with the PC ports of Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Sackboy A Big Adventure and the recently released Ghost Of Tsushima. If you are not particularly expert in PC gaming, we let you see for yourself on the video captures including the settings what was possible to obtain.

Honestly, it’s not bad at all!

Connections

The bare minimum in terms of connectivity but we get by
Photo YL

Built with ergonomics in mind and to be a summary of technology on a very modest sized device (31.1x22x1.59), the manufacturer has greatly limited the connections but we find the essentials. You will find the power port, an HDMI output, a USB-C display port which delivers 40Gbps, a USB 3.2 10Gbps and a 3.5mm jack. Picky users will be furious, no SD card reader, only a Micro SD port, a second USB 3.2 this time at 20Gbps and the second USB-C display port at 10Gbps. Overall, nothing special to report except that the battery is not removable. Is this still a surprise in 2024?

Our Verdict

It’s a little more generous on the left side
Photo YL

The ROG Zephyrus G14 is therefore a particularly interesting laptop in terms of performance with its ultra-precise Oled screen. Despite its very small format, it houses a GeForce RTX 4070 perfect for running the latest games on the market and for creating content such as image work and audio/video editing. Designed in a premium quality aluminum chassis, it inspires solidity and reliability despite a featherweight of 1.5kg which will allow you to take this little power monster everywhere!
