Get ready, as of November 19, Google Maps will stop hosting your history in the Cloud. Switching to local storage will result in the deletion of data older than three months.

It is through an email, like the one received by AndroidAuthority, that the Mountain View firm warns Google Maps users. As announced at the end of 2023, browsing history will soon be stored on the device and no longer in the cloud. According to the message received, the deadline is November 19.

On this fateful date, change will take place. Google will then try to save the last three months of history on the last device connecting to the app. Of course, any new saved routes will also be stored on the device running the app.

Good news however, you still have a way to avoid losing your most recent history. In the warning email, a link allows you to access a page to store your data. Two options appear to be available to you. The first is to keep them until you decide to delete them yourself. The second is to schedule an automatic deletion based on a certain predefined delay.

However, our colleagues report that a bug affecting certain users did not take into account the choice made via the form in question. The best solution therefore remains to use Google Takeout to export the data (by selecting the Maps history and letting yourself be guided by the procedure).
