Apple turns to an unexpected ally to reinvent the iPhone

On the sidelines of the presentation of Apple Intelligence during WWDC 2024, the Cupertino giant indicated that many language models could come to the iPhone in the near future. During a conference with developers and the press, Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, clarified that Gemini, Google’s generative AI, could be offered to iOS users. According to him, Apple wants “allow users to ultimately choose the models they want”.

With this in mind, the Californian giant is contacted several firms having developed their own generative artificial intelligences. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is currently in negotiations with Anthropic, the start-up behind the Claude chatbot, Perplexity, a company that offers AI designed for research, and… Meta.

Call in plus ChatGPT, Gemini et Claude

It turns out that Apple is also negotiating with Meta, the group behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Very engaged in the race for artificial intelligence, Mark Zuckerberg’s firm has unveiled a range of convincing linguistic models. The latest one, titled Llama 3, has established itself as a solid alternative to ChatGPT. Mirroring the OpenAI chatbot, Llama can answer questions, generate responses or assist the interlocutor in a wide range of tasks.

The integration of Llama, Perplexity or Claude would be similar to what Apple offers with ChatGPT. iPhone users should be able to contact generative AI in particular to carry out the most complex tasks. The intervention of third-party language models will be reserved for requests that the AI designed by Apple, and which operates locally on the iPhone, cannot execute. In this case, the iPhone will contact the servers of OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic and others.

Unexpected alliances

As the Wall Street Journal points out, the race for AI is forcing tech giants to form « alliances improbables ». Over the years, Meta and Apple have regularly clashed, particularly on the issue of confidentiality and privacy. With several updates to iOS, Apple has considerably hampered Meta’s data collection, dealing a serious blow to its business model. Meta reportedly lost billions of dollars due to Apple’s restrictive measures. In light of the rise and adoption of artificial intelligence, Apple has clearly decided to bury the hatchet.

According to the sources interviewed by the media, Apple will not pay the companies which will make their AI models available to the iPhone. On the other hand, Tim Cook’s group will authorize companies to sell paid subscriptions through Apple Intelligence. For OpenAI, Google, Claude or Meta, this is a godsend. Such an agreement helps promote their AI services to the billions of active Apple devices around the world.

Unsurprisingly, Apple would demand a portion of the profits generated. In the same way, the American firm recovers a share of the revenue generated by paid applications available on its App Store. For the moment, Apple is still in negotiations with Meta and other players involved in the development of AI. It is still possible that the talks could come to an end.
