It’s the 25th anniversary of one of the most famous video games in history. And the origin of its name can be summed up in just a few sentences.

The legendary Counter Strike conversation

One of the most famous shooters in the universe celebrates its 25th anniversary this week: Counter-Strike, which for decades now has had a loyal community of millions of players, tournaments with cash prizes that reach a million, and a reputation unshakeable international. The origins of this absolutely legendary shooting game go back to the end of the 1990s, when two American players who were barely students, Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe develop a mod for Half-Life. It was the great era of the 90s and 2000s when many enthusiasts were making a name for themselves by developing real experiences from mods, before Unity existed. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds also comes from an Ama 3 mod, the same for DayZ, and the same for Team Fortress 2 which finds its origins in a Quake 1 mod dating from 1997.

This mod then pitted two teams against each other: the terrorists and the counter-terrorists, on maps with varied environments and inspired by very real places. It blended tactical gameplay with team-based action and offered a refreshing experience, so refreshing that it encouraged Valve to collaborate with the duo to develop a full-fledged game, Counter-Strike 1.0, which was released in November 2000. Over time, the game is equipped with new features, new maps, an improved graphics engine and an ever-expanding community. As for the choice of name given to the game, it dates back to this discussion, forever captured in images.

Here, Gooseman and Cliffe discuss what they will name their game in 1999, during an instant messaging conversation that many thought was fake. However, Gooseman himself came to certify the veracity of the image on a Reddit topic five years earlier.

No, it’s not wrong… I remember this conversation perfectly… We thought about several choices.

The beginning of a great story

In 2004, a new era began for Counter Strike with the Source episode, a revisited version launched by Valve which took advantage of the graphics engine of Half-Life 2. It was this version which would become a reference software for the world. of competition before CS:GO took over in 2012, in turn experiencing wild popularity. Counter-Strike 2 was officially released in version 1.0 on September 27. This new opus of the famous license is not so much a game in its own right as an update of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive which has been given a nice facelift.
