Xbox exclusives on the verge of disappearing?

This year, the concept of exclusivity and porting has sparked numerous debates, not only within the community, but also among professionals in the video game industry.. Just at the start of 2024, Microsoft made headlines by announcing the porting of several Xbox titles to the Sony console, namely: Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush, Penmentet Sea of Thieves. These four games have joined the catalog of the PlayStation 5 between February 22 and April 30, 2024. Conversely, it is a PlayStation exclusive which was exported to Xbox Series on August 15: Kena : Bridge of Spiritsone of the best indie games available on PS5.

Since then, rumors surrounding potential ports have surfaced here and there on the web, and even if exclusives like Starfield or Senua’s Saga : Hellblade II don’t seem to be in a rush to make an appearance on Sony’s console at the moment, there may well be a change on the horizon. In an interview with Bloombergthe leader of Xbox Game Studios/Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencermade some revelations about the future of the company, such as the development of a portable console, but also the possibility of new ports in the more or less near future…

No limits for future Xbox ports

Speaking of the “Xbox Store” which has been in preparation for several months, Phil Spenceradmitted that the industry was evolving, and that “things were moving in the right direction.” According to Spencer, the idea of an “open platform where users and creators have more choices” is the next logical step. Spencer’s optimism is supported by the satisfactory results of the ports mentioned earlier, and the head of Microsoft Gaming had his share of things to say about future collaborations with Sony and Nintendo.

“Microsoft will continue this trend (releasing Xbox exclusives on other consoles) and will not exclude any games from Microsoft’s catalog.

I see no limit, no indication that certain games in our catalog should not be ported. But it’s still too early to make a decision on the next version of Halo.”

Phil Spencer, Bloomberg

For Spencer, all games in the Xbox catalog could potentially be ported to Sony and/or Nintendo consoles. We saw this recently with the release of Call of Duty : Black Ops 6 on all platforms, and this will also be the case for Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle which will be released on PS5 in 2025, a few months after its initial release on Xbox Series. However, the head of Microsoft Gaming was somewhat reserved about the future of major sagas like Halo, explaining that it was still too early to determine on which platform(s) players will be able to access the next game in the franchise.
