BORDEAUX. Quanteec’s technology, which reduces the use of servers in video streaming, by making each viewer a rebroadcaster, was selected by France TV to equip its media players. With the first test being the absorption of audience peaks during the Paris Games.

“We are ready and impatient to take on the challenge of the Olympic Games on France TV platforms,” enthuses Daniel Négru, CEO of Quanteec. The Bordeaux start-up created in 2021 by Daniel Négru, his brother Marius (COO) and Mathias Lacaud (CTO) was chosen by France Télévisions to equip all of its video broadcasting platforms with the first challenge being the Olympic Games. from Paris.

The interest of Quanteec technology is in fact to improve the performance of video streaming, while offering energy and cost savings. “Today, streaming technology is based on the deployment of servers. The more spectators there are, the more servers are needed, particularly when there are audience peaks,” recalls Daniel Négru. Which particularly targets sporting events, current events or highly anticipated episodes of series. “Our peer-to-peer technology addresses this issue because the more spectators there are, the less servers are needed, with each user becoming a server for the others,” he explains.

By absorbing these audience peaks, Quanteec is able to offload server usage by up to 90%, improving video quality, increasing energy savings (up to -55%) and lowering costs. for broadcasters (minimum -25%). Paid on the same model as server providers, who bill for the number of terabytes of data released each month, Quanteec offers a price divided by two.

Decarbonation you streaming

To benefit from the advantages of this technology, broadcasters simply have to integrate the Quanteec library into their video players. Then the multi-criteria algorithm developed by this team of streaming specialists from the University of Bordeaux manages stream quality, latency, server load and even energy consumption. “We continue to regularly improve our algorithm to support advertising, security constraints, new networks (telecoms or business, etc.), etc. », specifies Daniel Négru, who employs a team of around ten people which he hopes to expand this year.

The viewer benefits from better broadcast quality, while contributing to energy savings. “There is nothing to do except choose an application equipped with our technology. It only needs 1% of the processor of the devices (smartphone, tablet, computer, connected television, etc.) so as not to impact their use. We would like to engage everyone in this common sense approach, including the end user, to advocate for our solution. We are committed as standard bearers of this spirit of decarbonization of streaming,” he assures.

Sport, tourism and corporate

Quanteec has already convinced the 3 biggest players in the tourism webcam market, including Viewsurf, a platform on which travelers in search of snow in ski resorts, swell on the ocean or wishing to avoid traffic jams can connect simultaneously. the vacation route. And whose cameras were focused on Notre-Dame de Paris when the cathedral fire broke out in 2019. Bordeaux technology also equips the players of local French channels and has signed a contract with SportAll, which broadcasts images of French federations of motorsport, athletics, wrestling, etc.

Quanteec is also integrated into the video players of one of the Canadian leaders in sports broadcasting, “whose images are watched all over the world,” boasts Daniel Négru. But also broadcasters from Western Europe, Eastern Europe and should soon deploy in South America, before conquering the United States, “where we have a lot of prospects”, reveals- he. “We are also developing in the corporate segment, within the framework of webinars or large assemblies, via companies which provide recording and streaming platforms to companies, such as L’Oréal for example.”

Visibility

The contract signed for 4 years with France Télévisions, which begins with the Olympic Games, and will continue with “the Tour de France, the 6 Nations Tournament, other sporting events, series, TV games… should bring us visibility,” estimates Daniel Négru, who is aiming for audience peaks of one million spectators.

He thus hopes to maintain the independence of the company, most of whose competitors have been bought by Google, Microsoft and other server suppliers. “We are not in competition with them, we are complementary. We improve their operation by unloading and optimizing them,” he promises.

After the Olympics, Quanteec will be focused on its financial needs. “We will then see if we need to raise funds,” confides Daniel Négru.
