Change for your phone calls: finally the end of setbacks

Google wants to fight against telephone scams with its Scam Detection function. Based on Google AI, the latter will inform the user in real time in the event of suspicion.

Everyone gets unwanted calls. While some are filtered and marked as spam, others slip through. What worries you the most are phone scams. This remains one of the methods favored by scammers who manage to steal more than 1,000 billion dollars per year. Faced with increasingly sophisticated methods, the Mountain View firm is using artificial intelligence to fight more effectively.

She thus developed the Scam Detection function. Concretely, this analyzes the conversation in real time to compare it to the various conversation models associated with scams. If there is any doubt, the suspicion will result in an audio and haptic alert to warn the user, in addition to a message clearly displaying the possibility of a scam. It will then be possible to declare that it is not one or to simply end the call.

Of course, such a real-time system can raise questions, particularly regarding privacy. Google would like to reassure on this point by indicating that it is an option which is disabled by default. Everyone can activate it via their phone settings for all incoming calls. It is also possible to temporarily deactivate it during a particular call.

Another interesting point is that the analysis is done live on the device. In fact, no files (audio or written transcription) are saved locally or online. Nothing is therefore transmitted to Google or other third parties. Finally, let us point out that this security feature is being deployed on Pixels (from Pixel 6) but that it will soon be extended to other Android smartphones.
