The company LBM Agtech, also known as Boîte Maraichère, received a favorite mention from the jury during the Eureka! Wednesday, November 13.

In total, 11 projects improving the environmental record of companies, organizations or municipalities thanks to innovative solutions and clean technologies were highlighted during the Eureka! awards ceremony, organized by Écotech Québec, the City of Montreal and the Social Economy Council of the Island of Montreal (CESIM).

LBM Agtech, based in Sainte-Dorothée, conceptualizes and builds hydroponic greenhouse complexes in several countries around the world.

His project which caught the attention of the jury was carried out in Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot, in Montérégie, and came into operation in August.

This is a cutting-edge modular agriculture complex, which will allow a reduction of 800 tonnes/year of GHGs compared to a traditional greenhouse, thanks to several implemented measures.

“While we usually build vertical greenhouses where we can grow 5 floors of lettuce on top of each other, this complex allows us to cultivate 10 floors,” explains Richard Giunta, co-founder of LBM Agtech.

Among the technologies implemented, the use of LED lights will reduce the electricity bill by up to 60%, while technology developed by LBM Agtech will make it possible to use 90% less fertilizer and no pesticides.

LBM Agtech’s business model is unique, explains Richard Giunta. “We have two companies: LBM Agtech and La Boîte Maraichère. LBM Agtech designs the technologies and builds the greenhouse complexes and, once we have partner producers to grow the vegetables, the Boîte Maraichère takes care of the marketing and distribution.”

La Boîte Maraichère de Sainte-Hélène de Bagot, franchisee of La Boîte Maraichère Inc., joins the greenhouse complexes La Boîte Maraîchère Laval, located on Montée Saint-François, and La Boîte Maraichère Côte-du-Sud, located in Saint-Pierre-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud.

“Others are under construction, among others in Louiseville, Sainte-Adèle and Saint-Damien,” continues Richard Giunta.

The innovative spirit of LBM Agtech also allows it to shine elsewhere on the planet.

“Among our clients, there are several mining companies that build greenhouses to feed their employees,” mentions Richard Giunta. We are present in the Far North, as well as in the South, such as in Brazil.”
