More or fewer buttons? Gmail gives you the choice

The browser version of Gmail changes a little. Now, there is a simplified button bar to perform actions on your messages. But you can also expand it to access more actions.

The Gmail web interface is quite comprehensive. There are lots of buttons everywhere and it is sometimes difficult to navigate, especially when you are a novice. To help you, we regularly offer Frandroid tutorials on Gmail, but that may not be enough. This is why Google simplifies (a little) its interface, but leaves the choice to the most experienced.

Pimples that can reappear

When you read an email, just above there are a few buttons. Google has removed it to simplify its interface while still allowing it to quickly sort its newly arrived emails. The current buttons allow, among other things, to archive an email, indicate it as spam, place it in the trash, or mark it as “unread» or move it. Five actions in total are available. Only five? Yes, unless you want more.

From now on, you can click on the three-dot menu just to the right, then on “Enable advanced toolbar» in order to have access to more actions. Those unlocked are: putting it on hold, adding the processing of the email in question to Google Tasks or even access to the labels. Functions mainly dedicated to users with a specific activity, professional or associative for example.

The change is gradually rolling out to all Gmail users. For example, I have access to it on my personal account, but not with my professional account at the moment. If you don’t have this provision yet, just wait.
