Sony could make PlayStation 3 games compatible with the PS5. A wish formulated by players for many years now, but which has never been granted. Will we finally be able to take our PS3 discs out of the cupboard?
Every time a new generation of console is announced, a question arises almost immediately among many players: will it be backwards compatible with the games from the previous one? A legitimate question when you see the price of discs and other cartridges. If you move on to the new PlayStation or the new Switch means saying goodbye to your hard-won collection, many will choose to make do with what they have. Meeting these expectations, however, is not easy.
Due to technical considerations such asplatform architecture for example, it is sometimes impossible or almost impossible to ensure backward compatibility. Before the PlayStation 5 comes out, Sony announces that no, you will not be able to run your PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on it. The disappointment was great, but all hope was not lost when the issue came back to the table a few months later. Since then, the company has released certain games from its old consoles on PS5, only in numerical format and via subscription PS Plus. This could change.
PlayStation 3 games could become playable on PS5
According to sources like insider Nick Baker or journalist Jeff Grubb, Sony is working on a native backwards compatibility of PS3 on PS5. In other words: the possibility of inserting your PS3 cake into the PS5 and launching it. These are of course rumors that cannot be confirmed at the moment. They still agree on the fact that this would only concern a few PS3 titles, and that it would be similar to the way Microsoft makes its consoles backwards compatible with each other.
The question now is whether we can give credence to these assumptions. Insofar as Console manufacturers seem to be slowly moving towards all-digitalit’s hard to see what Sony would gain by satisfying a few PS3 and PS5 owners. Perhaps this is a technical experiment to test their ability to offer this kind of functionality in the future.
