Amazon is reportedly developing smart glasses for delivery drivers to guide them to, around and inside buildings where they need to deliver a package. This is what insiders reveal to the Reuters news agency. The glasses would have an integrated screen which could, for example, give delivery people indications about the presence of elevators or obstacles.
The development of these glasses for delivery drivers could take years. This is how data must first be collected about every house, street, sidewalk and driveway, according to sources. Amazon also reportedly struggled to develop a battery that would last a full workday, but at the same time be light enough to be used in glasses. According to people interviewed by Reuters, it is not yet certain whether these glasses will eventually be launched on the market.
Save time
Amazon itself declined to comment on the project. “We are constantly innovating to create an even safer and better delivery experience for drivers,” says a spokesperson for the online store group.
The indications provided by the glasses would save valuable time. According to estimates, the last part of a package’s journey is the most expensive for delivery companies. With such smart glasses, Amazon could therefore reduce delivery costs per package.
