The position of the M4 Mac Mini’s power button has been the target of several criticisms. Apple now responds by explaining this investment choice.
It was the surprise at the end of October, the new Mac mini equipped with an M4 chip was unveiled. Its particularity, apart from the redesign of the design, is that it is even smaller than the previous one. If it gains in thickness, rising to 5 cm instead of 3.6 cm, it especially loses in width, going from 19.7 cm to 12.7 cm. However, there is one detail that made the canvas react, namely the position of the ignition button. Indeed, the latter is strangely placed under the device, which does not seem practical at first glance. After a few days of silence, the Cupertino company explains this choice.
It was during an interview given by Bilibili that Greg Joswiak (senior vice president of global marketing) and John Ternus (vice president of hardware engineering) gave the explanation. The fact is that this is a technical necessity linked to the miniaturization of the device. Since the chassis was much smaller, engineers had to rethink the layout of the components. If such a choice was made, it is also because it is not necessary to turn off your Mac, the latter being sufficiently optimized, particularly in terms of energy management and memory, to simply keep it on standby when inactive. The duo specifically mentions the fact that the majority of users “almost never touch the power button”. In short, even if the placement of the button seems restrictive for some, its position should quickly be forgotten after the first ignition.
