How Genmoji, Apple’s emoji generator, works

At WWDC, Apple introduced Genmoji: an AI-powered emoji generator. But “Genmoji” are not real emoji strictly speaking…

As a reminder, an emoji is actually a punctuation mark that uses Unicode. This means that from a technical point of view, the emoji is just a character like any other, just like the letters of the alphabet. For this, Unicode must of course standardize said emoji, and that is why it releases an extended list every year.

Genmoji, the emoji generator presented by Apple at WWDC, does not work on the same principle. Indeed, it is impossible to create a new Unicode character each generation. So Genmoji are actually… stickers. Or rather, a variation of stickers designed to behave like emoji on the Apple ecosystem thanks to a new API, as MacRumors explains.

This means that Genmoji can be sent as stickers, but as you can imagine, there is a but: compatibility. Not only will Genmoji not be compatible with other environments like Android, but they will not be compatible with older versions of iOS either. For older iPhones, iPads and Macs, the Genmoji will be transformed into a text description. Not sure it’s as impactful…
