AMD just achieved its biggest quarterly jump in desktop processor market share since 2016, capturing 28.7% of the market in the third quarter of 2024, according to a new Mercury Research third-quarter market report 2024, according to a new report from Mercury Research. This is a jump of 5.7% from last quarter and 9.6% from the previous year.
The chipmaker’s share of desktop revenue also increased to 27.3%, 7.7% higher than last year. This jump is explained by strong sales of high-end processors, particularly the 3D V-Cache models and the new Ryzen 9000 series.
AMD secured 22.3% of the mobile processor market, up from 20.3% in the second quarter of 2024. Its revenue share in this sector reached 19.2%, up from 17.7% in the previous quarter. This success is largely due to the Ryzen AI 300 series APUs.
The server market also brought good news, with AMD’s share reaching 24.2% in Q3 2024, up from 23.3% year-on-year. Even more impressive, their server revenue share increased to 33.9%, up from 31.2% in Q3 2023. For the first time, AMD’s data center business surpassed the Intel’s data center and AI group, raking in $3.549 billion, while Intel earned $3.3 billion.
Intel still has the largest market share, with 71.3% for desktop and 77.7% for the mobile segment. Mercury Research reported that Intel attributed its decline in desktop market share to inventory adjustments at a customer site, pointing to a possible rebound in the fourth quarter of 2024.
