Ilon Musk said Tesla wouldn’t release a smartphone if Google and Apple didn’t start censoring apps and acting as strict gatekeepers.
What we know
In an interview with the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Ilon Musk indicated that Tesla could create a smartphone without Android or iOS, but that this was not a priority for the company. He stressed that Tesla would only go down this path if absolutely necessary, unless Apple and Google start acting to the detriment of users.
Musk also said Tesla has software that could form the basis of a smartphone, as well as the ability to use the Starlink satellite communications service.
However, creating a successful smartphone without Android or iOS is a challenge, as Microsoft’s experience with Windows Phone has shown. Even the use of Android is not a guarantee of success, as Amazon showed with its Fire Phone 2014. This is perhaps also the reason why the billionaire did not invest in the creation of a Tesla Phone.
