Snoop Dogg is coming to Fortnite!

You probably already know this if you continue to play Fortnitebut the brand new season has only just been released! Indeed, on November 2, Epic Games ended the 4th season of Chapter 5 dedicated to Marvel and especially Doctor Doom to make way for a brand new season called Remix Chapter 2. As its name suggests, the goal is to resurrect the map and the atmosphere of Chapter 2, while obviously bringing a whole bunch of new features. Among them, we of course find a new Battle Pass full of skins, and among the new skins, we especially find several rappers including Snoop Dogg.

While his popularity has already taken off significantly since the Olympic Games, the Californian rapper is making a name for himself in one of the most popular games in the world. His character is even part of the game’s lore since he takes charge of the Agency, renamed Doggpound for the occasion. In addition to Snoop Dogg, you can also find Ice Spice et Eminemthe latter even being accompanied by a sulphator which draws out lyrics as fast as the rapper pronounces them. Pure genius.

Snoop Dogg’s new dance in Fortnite could be more dangerous than we think

Of course, in addition to the (not so) new map and the new skins, it’s also new emotes which have been integrated into the game with this new season. Among them, we find in particular Snoop’s Walk danceassociated with the rapper, and it already worries many Americans. If you look at this dance from a French point of view and without knowing the recent history of gangs in the United States, you will surely see no problem. But this famous “Snoop’s Walk” is in fact a derivative of Crip Walkinga dance step which serves as a recognition tool for a gang Very active Californian in the 90s: the Crips.

The problem is that apart from this somewhat dubious reference to a gang responsible for many deaths, it is actually very dangerous to reproduce it in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Following the integration of this dance in Fortnite, we can read a lot of testimonies on the Internet from American players who grew up in Californian neighborhoods affected by the gang war a few years ago. According to them, in the 90s, children were told very seriously never to repeat this famous Crip Walking, because doing it, even innocently, in a street that “belonged” to the rival gang, the Bloods, could cost them their lives.

Knowing that the dances that have been integrated into Fortnite have often ended up being reproduced en masse by young players (Floss, Take the L, Justice, etc.), adding a dance that closely resembles that of the Crip could be very dangerous for some. players. However, it is also worth noting that some Americans now living in California have tried to reassure everyone that gang wars are not nearly as prevalent in 2024 as they were in the 90s. Regardless, using a dance in Fortnite that the Crips did when killing a rival in real life also poses some ethical questions, especially when you know how dances are used in the game. At the time of its release, the channel MTV did not hesitate to ban the clip for Drop It Like It’s Hot, one of Snoop Dogg’s most popular songs, because it featured Crip Walking. It remains to be seen whether Epic Games will decide to react to this subject or not.
