Android 16: the mobile system will arrive sooner than expected

Google is changing its strategy. The web giant, which used to launch major versions of Android in the fall, in the third quarter of each year, is shaking up its release schedule next year. The Mountain View firm confirmed on Friday the rumors that had been circulating for several weeks by announcing that the future Android 16 mobile system, known by the code name Baklava, will arrive earlier than expected. Its release is in fact brought forward by several months, to the second quarter of 2025, that is to say between April and June, compared to the traditional months of August, September and October, in recent years.

“We plan to release the major version in the second quarter rather than the third to better align with the release schedule of devices in our ecosystem, so that more devices can receive the major version of ‘Android earlier,’ Google said on the developer blog. This important change will therefore allow more smartphones to be released with the latest version of Android. This advancement could also allow developers to benefit from the latest resources in artificial intelligence and machine learning from Google, underlines the specialized site Cnet.

Furthermore, in addition to the launch of the major update, Google is also planning a minor update for the fourth quarter of 2025. This will focus on “feature updates, optimizations and bug fixes”, explains the American technology giant.
