The two young children who have been detected in recent days come from the same siblings. They were “taken care of and present, to date, no more risk for the community concerned”specified this Thursday morning the department of Gironde which did not communicate on their state of health or whether they were vaccinated, in the name of medical confidentiality.
At the Jean Jaurès school, located in the city center of Libourne which accommodates 126 students, class took place normally this morning. “It was the department’s tuberculosis control center (CLAT) which notified the school. The academic inspectorate is also aware”said the director, who did not seem worried.
The tuberculosis control center will organize a screening which will include students, teachers and professionals identified as contacts in the school, in order to detect secondary cases. This screening includes a chest x-ray and an immunological test.
An information meeting is also being organized this Thursday, November 21 at 4:30 p.m. with parents of students whose children are concerned, CLAT doctors and the Bordeaux academic inspector. This meeting is not open to the public.
A vaccination will be offered to children who are not up to date. “You need to check if your child’s vaccinations are up to date.specifies the Department. Vaccination does not prevent contracting pulmonary tuberculosis, but limits contagion and serious forms of the disease. reminds the community.
Tuberculosis is a disease that must be reported to the Regional Health Agency. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infectious disease caused by Kock’s bacillus, very often pulmonary and contagious. The people most at risk are very young children. Symptoms are cough, fever and sputum. The treatment is taking antibiotics.
When a person has pulmonary tuberculosis, it is essential to screen those around them for other cases of tuberculosis. This makes it possible to treat all infected people as quickly as possible and thus limit the risks of transmission of the disease, indicates the ARS.
It is therefore necessary that all people who have been in prolonged contact with a patient receive screening.
According to Public Health France, which has figures for 2021, 4,306 cases were declared, i.e. a declaration rate of 6.4/100,000, compared to 4,606 cases and 6.8 cases/100,000 in 2020. Tuberculosis has been declining since the last twenty years in France.
