Multiplayer games can be rife with toxicity, other titles like League of Legends are downright notorious for it. The same would apply to Valorant and several actions will soon be implemented by the development team.

Valorant against toxic players

Riot Games, the fathers of the famous competitive FPS Valorant, have expressed their position against toxic players. Anna Donlon, director of the studio, announced that “those who need to say insults to enjoy the game are not welcome, they should look elsewhere.” A strong sentence, which undoubtedly says a lot about the gaming community. Especially since Riot Games titles are widely known for the toxicity of its players, despite the various tools put in place in-game to avoid these behaviors.

It was in a post on This announcement comes after several cases of abusive behavior were shared on social media. Donlon says that “Too often, it takes someone to be exposed to the worst behavior… so we can better understand where the gaps are in our systems.”

What solutions to this?

If the post clearly explains that fighting against these behaviors is a priority for Riot Games, it is nonetheless difficult: message filtration and user protection technologies are not an answer to everything. However, the vast majority of Valorant players who have been sanctioned for bad behavior do not do it again, Donlon explains. Repeat offenders actually represent only a tiny part of the community, but the protection systems put in place are not enough to deter them.

Temporary ban, voice and text chat restriction, pre-game timer, etc. If these sanctions are already in place, others should be added to the list to punish toxic players. The team announced that stronger and faster sanctions will be put in place for extreme behavior, up to and including banning players’ hardware. Riot also wants to expand its voice chat rating system to other regions, implement a zero-tolerance chat system (preventing the publication of a message of an extremely abusive nature) and muting the player for the rest Of the game.

Remember, in July 2022, Riot Games announced that it would begin recording voice chat discussions in America, with the aim of reducing toxic in-game behavior. Joe Ziegler, director of the game, announced during the launch of Valorant that he wanted to “definitely get ahead of the toxicity of League of Legends”.
