According to the Department of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES), around 10 million medical imaging procedures (scanners, MRI, etc.) were carried out in 2020 in public and private establishments. non-profit in France. Faced with this colossal volume of exams to analyze, radiologists are faced with a considerable workload… which often leads to burnout. In addition, this frantic pace inevitably increases the risk of errors. Artificial intelligence (AI) then appears to be an essential tool to assist these healthcare professionals and improve the accuracy of diagnoses.

If, in France, the medical community is still a little cautious on the subject, in the United States, it is different. Particularly in the radiology sector, very interested in the capabilities of AI for their profession. At the start of 2024, 38% of professionals in the sector said they had already integrated AI into their processes, while 62% were considering implementation within the next five years. In the USA, 79% of AI-enabled medical devices authorized by the Food and Drug Administration concern radiology, followed by cardiology and neurology.

AI, a real asset in the field of health

In France, Health Tech is the second most important field in terms of AI, after data storage and the cloud. 15% of start-ups focused on artificial intelligence in 2023 are specialized in the field of health according to France Digitale. Among them, we find the start-up AZmed or even Milvue, founded in 2018 by a radiologist and two engineers. This young French company – present at the VivaTech 2024 show – develops artificial intelligence solutions aimed at optimizing and facilitating the work of radiologists.

“Our offer is divided into two main parts, explains Peggy Séjournée, COO (director of operations) of Milvue. On the one hand, medical diagnosis aid tools, marketed for 3 years, focusing in particular on pulmonary, osteoarticular and spinal imaging for adults and children. On the other hand, a recent solution for the automatic generation of medical reports from voice, powered by generative AI. Obviously, in both cases, human intervention is systematic. »

A significant productivity gain for radiologists

Milvue’s solutions promise substantial benefits for healthcare professionals. “According to feedback from practices with which we work, the use of our solutions would increase the productivity of radiologists by 30 to 40%, while reducing errors that can be due to fatigue“, assures Peggy Séjournée.

For patients, this translates into better quality of care, particularly in emergencies, where the speed of X-ray analysis can be crucial. The fully automated process, from image analysis to voice reporting, aims to considerably simplify the work of radiologists, faced with chronic or even structural overload.

To develop, Milvue has received support from Microsoft since last year. The start-up participated in the Gen AI Startup program in 2023. “We notably benefited from Azure credits to accelerate the development of our automated medical reporting solution. The processed data is obviously anonymized before being sent to the cloud. And this one is based in France »specifies Peggy Séjournée.
