Why were Steve Jobs’ children deprived of an inheritance?

Steve Jobs died on October 5, 2011, in Palo Alto, at the age of 56. from a rare form of pancreatic cancer. He is, to this day, one of the most iconic figures in the technology industry. Co-founder of Apple Inc., with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Waynehe revolutionized the computer industries but also music, through animation and mobile telephony. Steve Jobs’ real masterstroke came with the launch of the Macintosh in 1984, which introduced the graphical interface but especially the mouse. Ousted from Apple in 1985, after internal conflicts, he created NeXT, an IT companyand bought a small animation division of Lucasfilm, which later became… Pixar. It was also under the direction of Steve Jobs that Pixar produced projects like “Toy Story”gradually becoming a leader in digital animation. He returned to Apple in 1997 after the acquisition of NeXT and it is under his leadership that Apple launched revolutionary products such as the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad.

It was his vision for design and user experience that helped solidify Apple and make it a leading company to this day. On the private side, Steve Jobs had a complex relationship with fatherhood. He had a first daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, with Chrisann Brennan in 1978 and initially refused to acknowledge her before his daughter’s mother launched a legal battle. He finally recognized Lisa and even tried to establish a relationship with her. In 1991, he married Laurene Powell, with whom he had three children: Reed, Erin and Eve. When he died, however, these last three inherited nothing from their father. For what ? This choice was, in large part, motivated by Steve Jobs’ personal philosophy which believed in the value of work and independence. He wanted his children to develop their own paths, rather than becoming dependent on his fortune. It is therefore his widow Laurene Powell Jobs who inherited the majority of his fortune which she uses today for educational and philanthropic initiatives. If his last three children were disinherited, this is not the case for his eldest, Lisa.

Steve Jobs’ widow explains how she manages her inheritance

Indeed, the one whosehis fortune was estimated at more than ten billion dollars moment of his death, made the choice that his first daughter could inherit part of his fortune. Steve Jobs wanted, in some way, to compensate for the fact that he was not there for her and initially refused to recognize her. The other three children of the Apple co-founder don’t have to worry financially since they are quite successful in life. Reed works within the Emerson collective, Eve is a model at DNA Model Management while Erin, more discreet, also has a situation that gives her nothing to envy of the others. On the subject of the family heritage, the widow of Steve Jobs confided during an interview with Daily Mail in 2020, that she wasn’t interested by the fact of “building on the legacy of a legacy.” “Steve wasn’t interested in that. If I live long enough, this legacy will end with me.” she assured.
