Windows 11 is the victim of a problem that is the Source of heated discussions. Installing the latest updates prevents you from using a VPN.

VPN is the contraction of Virtual Pprivate NOTetwork. This is a useful technique for improving security and preserving a certain confidentiality on the Internet, especially when connecting through a public Wi-Fi network.

The problem is known to Microsoft which has confirmed it. It accompanies the April 2024 updates, specifically KB5036893. The firm explains

Windows devices may experience VPN connection failures after installing the April 2024 Security Update (KB5036893) or the April 2024 Non-Security Update.

This bug affects Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016 2012 R2, Server 2012, 2008 R2 and Server 2008.

Microsoft adds that an investigation is underway to work on a fix. It will be offered in a future Windows update.

Windows and the VPN bug, a solution exists

If you are not experiencing this problem, there is a good chance that you have not yet installed the said update. It is then advisable to pause Windows Update while waiting for the Microsoft patch.

If you have already installed the problematic update, there is a workaround. It involves uninstalling it.
