To limit the risks of downloading malware or providing private information to fake government applications, Google has implemented a new icon. Now, a badge appears on the page of an app in the Play Store if it is developed by a state agency.

A badge to confirm the authenticity of apps

This little badge, which is accompanied by the words “Government”, is displayed on the government applications page but also in the list of apps, search results and the main feed. This allows users to confirm their legitimacy at a glance and builds trust at the time of download. Consumers therefore avoid traps such as malware or phishing.

For the moment, this new badge is only deployed in the United States, followed by Brazil, Canada, Australia and South Korea. It remains to be seen whether France will be affected by this new feature, especially since there are a huge number of government applications on the French Play Store: France Idété, Compte Ameli, Impots.gouv, Amendes.gouv Simplimmat, France Travail , CAF, My Training account, My retirement account, etc.

Several rules for developers to follow

The specialized media 9to5Google specifies that the Mountain View firm has been testing this badge for some time. Developers, to display this icon on their applications, have several rules to follow such as the use of government email addresses or additional verifications to carry out.
