iPad: everything that will change with the new European laws

To comply with requests from the European Commission, which considers that the iPad falls within the framework of the DMA, Apple had to make some changes for this fall. These were finally the subject of an official announcement…

iPadOS will undergo quite a few changes to comply with its “gatekeeper” status according to the European Union. These are generally the same new features that are present on the iPhone and which have been affected by European regulations for a long time.

In an official announcement from the Apple brand, the most important changes for the iPad were revealed.

Safari will no longer (necessarily) be the default browser

As with the iPhone, the iPad will soon offer more browser customization. It will thus be possible to choose a default browser other than Safari (and even to completely and permanently delete the application) thanks to an intuitive system. And what’s more, developers will also find their task much easier.

Indeed, until now, all browsers present on iPad were required to be designed on Webkit, while they can now be based on other models, such as Chromium (already in a quasi-monopoly situation on browsers, since this Open Source base is the one on which browsers such as Microsoft Edge or Opera, and of course Google Chrome, were built).

Third-party app stores are also coming to iPadOS

Just like for iOS, the big major change with iPadOS is the possibility of installing applications on the iPhone directly through third-party stores, but also of downloading applications directly from the Web. The rules for these downloads can be expected to be broadly similar to those for the iPhone.

Small note regarding developers: if the same app is installed by a user on both iOS and iPadOS in a period of less than twelve months, it will count as a single installation (some developers having to pay a “tax” of 50 cents for each installation, that’s a pretty important detail…).
