why should we follow this series of smartphones?

Touched and absolutely not sunk, HUAWEI stands up and still launches smartphones in . The Chinese manufacturer has just made official the availability for pre-order of its Pura 70 series. Le Journal du Geek was recently able to follow the announcement of this series which follows the famous P range from HUAWEI. Renowned for its careful photo equipment and its overall performance, the series is the symbol of the triumphant HUAWEI of the late 2010s. The international context and American sanctions have caused this series to be forgotten on the market, but the manufacturer wants to remind us of good memory.

HUAWEI’s ambition? Show all your know-how

There are three HUAWEI Pura 70s, with the range including the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro and Pura 70 Ultra. A high-end, and even premium, line for the manufacturer which promises to “push the limits of mobile photography”. All three devices inherit the same design, introducing what HUAWEI calls the “Forward Symbol Design” on the back. The series contrasts with the lines of previous series to offer curves that are intended to be “modern, minimalist and elegant”. As for the famous “Forward” symbol, it symbolizes the brand’s desire to move forward.

All models in the range have a new generation screen called X-True. 6.6-inch (Pura 70) and 6.8-inch (Pura 70 Pro and Ultra) OLED panels are installed, offering high definition at 460 ppi (1256 x 2760 pixels for the Pura 70 and 1260 x 2844 pixels for the flagship models). The screens claim a brightness of up to 2,500 nits while LTPO technology allows an adaptive refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz. Above the screens, the Pura 70 and Pura 70 Pro have Kunlun Super Durable glass including resistance has been improved by 100%. The Pura 70 Ultra goes even further with its Kunlun Crystal Armor glass, combining Kunlun Super Durable glass and Crystal Armor anti-scratch technology. HUAWEI ensures that scratch resistance increases by 300% on its flagship model.

Note that the Pura 70 opts for a flat-edged screen while the Pura 70 Pro and Pura 70 offer four slightly rounded corners. Less visible for some time, this format aims to make the experience more immersive. The entire range benefits from IP68 certification.

Kirin 9010: a Chinese success, but no show of force

Under the hood, HUAWEI quickly mentions that its range includes a Kirin 9010 chip. This octa-core chip, still engraved in 7 nm, seems to be a slight evolution of the Kirin 9000s. On paper, we are far from a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and a significant performance gap exists between the two chips. This is not a surprise since HUAWEI is not only deprived of Google services since the American embargo.

It can no longer work with a chip champion like TSMC, which prevents it from accessing the latest technologies. Succeeding in offering a Kirin 9000s or Kirin 9010 chip in such a short time remains a great achievement for HUAWEI and China. Rather than , the manufacturer wants to focus on its market first and this SoC allows it to offer 5G… in China. In France, the Pura 70 does not have 5G and this necessarily complicates the task of the range internationally,

To accompany the Kirin 9010, there is 12 to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage.

Rather than performance, the manufacturer focuses on the photo experience and the series impresses. During the presentation, HUAWEI did not hesitate to compare its Pura 70 to the iPhone 15 Pro from the American . To support the comparison, the manufacturer offers a one-inch, 50-megapixel main sensor on the Pura 70 Ultra, associated with retractable optics and variable aperture (f/1.6 to f/4.0). HUAWEI assures that the optics have been tested for 300,000 retractions and this particularity allows to offer more space inside the internal structure of the camera.

An advanced photo configuration

On the back of the Pura 70 Ultra, we also find a 40-megapixel ultra-wide angle (f/2.2, 13mm equivalent) and a 50-megapixel telephoto lens (f/2.1). The latter offers a 3.5x optical zoom, as well as a macro function and optical image stabilization (OIS). In addition to the hardware part, HUAWEI emphasizes the photo experience and mentions a camera capable of freezing moving subjects at a speed of 300 km/h.

The Pura 70 and Pura 70 Pro retain a 50 Mpx main sensor (f/1.4 to f/4.0), but it is smaller (1/1.3). The classic model adds a 13 Mpx ultra wide-angle (f/2.2) and a 12 Mpx periscopic telephoto lens (f/3.4, 5x optical zoom, OIS). The Pro variant offers a 12.5 MP ultra-wide-angle (f/2.2) and a 48 MP telephoto lens (f/2.1, x3.5 optical zoom, OIS).

Finally, the Pura 70 integrates a 4,900 mAh battery in a compact format (7.95 mm). It adds 66W fast charging, as well as 50W wireless fast charging. The Pura 70 Pro model is slightly thicker (8.4mm) and houses a 5,050mAh battery, compatible with 100W wired charging At the same time, it offers 80W wireless charging technology for up to 50% charging in 15 minutes.

The Pura 70 Ultra has the same thickness and has a 5,200 mAh battery. Both 100W wired and wireless (80W) SuperCharge technologies are available. These three smartphones run EMUI 14.2 and do not have Google services.

Without Google or 5G, but with premium prices

The three representatives of the Pura 70 series are now available for pre-order in France. Here are the prices and configurations:

  • HUAWEI Pura 70 at 999 euros, with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage
  • HUAWEI Pura 70 Pro at 1,199 euros with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage
  • HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra at 1,499 euros with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage

Despite the absence of 5G and Google services (officially), HUAWEI remains on high prices worthy of the flagship models on the market. This can be explained by the advanced photo equipment that the manufacturer offers on its new range. If you are interested in the brand’s smartphones, there are also the nova 12s.
