Folding smartphones are very nice on paper, but the price tends to discourage you from making the purchase. Especially since fears about the durability of these little technological gems can also slow down more than one person.

Here is a smartphone priced at 600 euros making its way onto the French market. Its name, the Nubia Flip. The basic configuration, 8 GB + 256 GB of storage, places it far, far below the previous price champion in this category, the Motorola Razr 40 which sold for 899 euros upon release.

To be honest, the latter is currently trading at 699 euros, which places it at the same price as the most muscular configuration of the Nubia (12 + 512 GB), currently unavailable on the site. But the Nubia Flip should, in all likelihood, see its price also change in the coming months.

Smart savings

In which areas has the Chinese brand made savings? Difficult to say with certainty, but the chip seems to us to be a good candidate. It is in fact a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, both an old chip and more mid-range oriented, more than sufficient for traditional use, but far from the performance peaks of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 of a Galaxy Z Flip 5 for example.

Let’s also mention the photo configuration. The Nubia Flip has a 50 Mpx main sensor, which is classic, but loses ground on the secondary sensor, which only has 2 Mpx. This is a depth sensor that is supposed to help in portrait mode.

On the other hand, the Nubia Flip does very well in terms of charging and autonomy, at least on paper, because we have a 4310 mAh battery, respectable for a Flip format, as well as 33W fast charging, with charger supplied in the box. As a reminder, Samsung’s Z Flip 5 does not offer a charger and only supports a power of 25 W. Nothing decisive, but a welcome little extra on a smartphone sold much cheaper.

As for the screens, Nubia has obviously not tried to compete with Samsung on the size of the external panel. Here we have a 1.43-inch OLED screen with a round format and proprietary widgets. Inside, the OLED folding screen has a diagonal of 6.9 inches, but with a ratio of 21:9, which should give a fairly elongated appearance to the smartphone, but which can be practical for watching films.

The Nubia Flip still benefits from WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 as well as dual-band GPS (L1+L5).

We will try to obtain a copy from the brand in order to test it and write complete feedback, coupled with 01Lab measurements.
