It will be 5 years since Huawei was banned from the United States following multiple sanctions. One of the consequences is very visible: Chinese brand smartphones can no longer offer Google applications. There is indeed a recent exception with the Mate 60, but since 2019, Huawei is moving further and further away from Android. It is not for nothing that the firm launched its HarmonyOS mobile operating system the same year. Still based on Android, it will soon completely turn its back on it with HarmonyOS NEXT.

Surely motivated by this emancipation, Huawei announced during its last Analyst Summit its desire to offer HarmonyOS to as many people as possible. “We will work hard to develop the HarmonyOS application ecosystem in the Chinese market first, and then, from country to country, we will gradually start expanding it to other parts of the world“said Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu. To achieve this, the first step is to multiply the number of applications available on the platform. A work which is based primarily on uses in China.

Huawei wants to see its HarmonyOS mobile operating system in every country in the world

Eric Xu explains that “In the Chinese market, Huawei smartphone users spend 99% of their time on around 5,000 applications. We have therefore decided to dedicate 2024 to porting these applications to HarmonyOS as a first step, with the aim of truly unifying the operating system and the application ecosystem. We also encourage porting other applications to HarmonyOS“. The manager specifies that of these 5,000 apps, 4,000 are already in the process of being adapted to Huawei’s mobile operating system.

The company’s ambitions are very clear: she wants to position HarmonyOS as an alternative to Android or iOSa third mobile operating system for the world“. The road may be very long for the brand, particularly in Europe where it is difficult to see how it could encourage users to turn away from Google.
