The testicles play a key role in the reproductive process. They are the site of spermatogenesis, the process of producing sperm, which are necessary for the fertilization of the egg for conception. Additionally, the testes secrete testosterone, the male sex hormone responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics, regulation of libido and erectile function. Thus, the testicles contribute to male fertility and the maintenance of good general health in men. In the event of sudden pain in the testicles, inflammation of the epididymis, orchitis, hydrocele or testicular torsion, a medical consultation is necessary.
Male anatomy: what is the normal position of the testicles?
Normally, the testicles are located outside the body, in the scrotum, a skin sac located under the penis. Some researchers say that the testicles need to be kept at a slightly lower temperature than the rest of the body to facilitate sperm production. Others, on the other hand, think that the freshness obtained by this external position helps keep the spermatozoa dormant before they become activated when they are subjected to a higher temperature inside the vagina. In some cases, one (or both) testicles do not descend into the scrotum during fetal development, which may require surgery. This is called cryptorchidism.
