Like every quarter, the analysis firm Counterpoint Research shared this week its results for the first months of the year in terms of smartphone sales. This time it is not a question of defining the manufacturer that sold the most phones during the half-year, but of distinguishing device by device, to find out which models sold the most during the first quarter of 2024. .

Unsurprisingly, two manufacturers occupy the 10 places in the ranking: Samsung and Apple. While the American firm is positioned in five places in the ranking, including the first 4 positions, its Korean competitor comes behind by placing five of its smartphones on the other steps of this very large podium:

  1. iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4.4%
  2. iPhone 15: 4.3%
  3. iPhone 15 Pro: 3.7%
  4. iPhone 14: 1.9%
  5. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: 1.9%
  6. Samsung Galaxy A15 5G: 1.5%
  7. Samsung Galaxy A54: 1.4%
  8. iPhone 15 Plus: 1.3%
  9. Samsung Galaxy S24: 1.0%
  10. Samsung Galaxy A34: 1.0%

Samsung’s top of the range well positioned

More surprisingly, Samsung manages to position itself not only with mid- or entry-level phones – such as the Galaxy A15 5G, the Galaxy A34 or the Galaxy A54 – but also with its most premium smartphone launched at the start of the year: the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This is a great blow for the Korean firm which until now managed to generate volume mainly with its more accessible models, but whose high-end smartphones had more difficulty selling. A problem that Apple does not face, which is content to offer almost only premium smartphones, sold for more than 800 euros.

Last year, the ranking was essentially the same, with the iPhone 14, 14 Pro Max, 14 Pro and 13 in the top four places in the ranking. However, the best-selling Samsung smartphone in the first quarter of 2023 was then an entry-level model, the Galaxy A13, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra only came in sixth place. According to Counterpoint Research, the strong sales of the Galaxy S24 and S24Ultra can be explained in particular by the AI-related features promoted by Samsung. It is also possible that the Galaxy S range benefited from a more advantageous schedule, with a launch as early as the middle of January, while the Galaxy A range was launched later in the quarter, in mid-March.
