Yamaha R9 It’s alive

With the breathtaking performance and innovative technology of the R series, the R9 represents a completely new generation in the supersport segment.

It cannot be overlooked that the supersport market has changed over the years. The needs and wishes of drivers have evolved and emissions regulations have become stricter. Yamaha has therefore decided to offer the legendary R1 as a pure track model from 2025 with the introduction of the R1 RACE and the R1 GYTR.

Even though the R1 GYTR and R1 RACE will remain the top models in the Supersport series with their ultimate racetrack performance, Yamaha will continue to focus on street-friendly Supersport models in the future. The success of the R7 has shown that there is still demand for road-going super sports models.

The introduction of the R9 completes the tier structure within the Supersport category. It starts in the entry-level class with the R125 and continues through the R3 in the A2 category and the medium-heavy R7 up to the R9. The still important R1 GYTR, R1 RACE, R6 GYTR and R6 RACE models retain their place in the product range, but with their high performance remain reserved for the racetrack.

Although this new generation of Supersport opens a new chapter, the identity of the Supersport range, born from Yamaha’s racing DNA, remains the same. From design features to racing-developed technologies, every Supersport model is a product of Yamaha’s racing experience at the highest level.

The design and technology come from racing. Both have been combined in the R9 with the widely praised three-cylinder CP3 engine that has revolutionized the Yamaha brand over the last decade. The combination of this high-torque engine and Yamaha’s renowned racing precision creates a perfectly balanced super sports car that lives up to its status as the flagship of the R series and offers convincing sporting performance on both the road and the racetrack.

REDESIGNED HANDLEBAR SWITCHES WITH COMPLETELY REDESIGNED CONTROLS

The R9’s switches are intuitive and easy to use. The focus is on minimizing the number of buttons to operate a variety of functions. The shape of the buttons and the feel during operation have been extensively refined to enable optimal operation with gloves.

CRUISE CONTROL AND SPEED LIMITER

To make journeys over longer distances easier, the R9 is equipped with cruise control that can be activated at speeds above 40 km/h and from third gear. After the cruise speed is set, it can be increased or decreased in 1km/h increments by pressing the switch once or continuously by holding the switch. The cruise control can be deactivated with either the push of a button, the brake, the clutch or the throttle grip.

The speed limiter, which controls engine power, allows you to set a maximum speed to ensure that the motorcycle does not exceed the selected speed.

Advanced R1 based electronics and YRC modes

The R9’s six-axis high-tech IMU was developed directly from the R1’s electronic systems and constantly measures acceleration in the forward-backward, up-down and left-right directions as well as the angular velocity when rotating around the three spatial axes.

The IMU is able to send data in real time to the ECU, which controls the electronic assistance systems and changes the behavior of the motorcycle depending on the assistance selected.

INTEGRATED DRIVING MODES

Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) settings allow the rider to customize his/her riding experience by adjusting the engine power and level of electronic assistance to suit his/her preferences and riding conditions.

The three integrated riding modes “SPORT”, “STREET” and “RAIN”, with their factory settings and different levels of intervention for different conditions, are complemented by two pre-configurable custom modes and four TRACK modes. This allows creating specific YRC settings for specific situations or conditions by adjusting the level of electronic assistance such as Power Delivery (PWR), Traction Control (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), Brake Control (BC), Back Slip Regulator (BSR), Engine Brake Management (EBM) and Front Wheel Lift Control (LIF), all of which can be adjusted directly from the R9’s YRC settings screen or via the Yamaha Y-Connect smartphone app.

For optimal racing starts, the R9 also has a launch control system that supports the driver when starting and accelerating from a standstill.

And for use on the racetrack there is the option of switching off the rear ABS.

THIRD GENERATION QUICK SHIFT SYSTEM

Yamaha’s third-generation Quick Shift System (QSS) enables clutchless upshifts and downshifts. Setting 1 allows this when accelerating (upshifts) and decelerating (downshifts). Setting 2 also allows for downshifts when accelerating and upshifts when decelerating, providing greater functionality in a wider range of scenarios.
