The last 30 days or so were not what FC Thun had imagined. And yet he didn’t completely leave the top group in the Challenge League.

The home game against Xamax is therefore the hit of the round. It’s a match in which Mauro Lustrinelli’s team has a lot to make up for – and does. The Oberlanders win the top battle.

They were criticized just a week ago, but now they are already top of the table again because Etoile Carouge lost at Stade Lausanne/Ouchy. It can happen that quickly.

Thun’s mini negative series

Flashback: A happy 2:2 in Schaffhausen, 1:2 at home against Bellinzona, 0:0 in Wil, in between the cup exit (0:2) against GC: FC Thun suddenly raised doubts as to whether they were really like that is good, as many expected. The promotion favorite number 1 lost the leader position and even fell back to third place behind league newcomers (!) Carouge and Neuchâtel Xamax.

A mini-negative series, the likes of which never existed last season, is one thing. That can happen. But the way in which the Oberlanders performed was something to think about. Partly without fire, without ideas, discouraged, with an offensive department that only existed on paper. The negative highlight was the tragedy against Wil last Monday.

Four new guys on the starting grid

Coach Mauro Lustrinelli reacts. Compared to the previous game, he ordered four new players into the starting line-up against Xamax: Balaruban, Janjicic, Matoshi and Frith, instead of Franke, Roth, Reichmuth and Meichtry. The people of Thun are undoubtedly more committed than in Wil. They are a long way from 1-0 for now, even though the away defense is considered vulnerable.

Only Marc Gutbub, who works non-stop, is able to keep Xamax goalkeeper Edin Omeragic seriously occupied twice (25th, 45th). A Janjicic cross finds no taker in between. Nothing more will happen in the first half.

The guests, currently the strongest offensive team in the Challenge League, are more dangerous: Hussayn Touati fails at the crossbar (13th), Shkelqim Demhasaj narrowly misses after 38 minutes, and a little later Thun is lucky that a foul penalty is not whistled.

Leadership managed effortlessly

Even after the break, the home team is moving forward more than Xamax. And the moment comes when it’s practically only Thun playing, who suddenly actually creates scoring opportunities and is rewarded in the 65th minute. Valmir Matoshi deserves to take the lead.

It’s the winning goal. Xamax is no longer able to react, the Lustrinelli crew manages the lead without any problems.
