The tennis legend is currently strolling around Wimbledon, where he was honored on Tuesday on the 20th anniversary of his first triumph on the London turf.
If his presence is an event, and even if he has won the Wimbledon tournament eight times, Roger Federer does not escape a few basic security rules: such as presenting an access badge and his membership card to access the various tournament sites.
On social networks, the Basel took the opportunity to make a subtle nod to a misadventure that happened to him last year while he was passing through London. “I remembered it this time,” he wrote on his Twitter account, brandishing two membership cards that guarantee him access to the Wimbledon tournament. This time around, the tennis legend is in order, unlike last year.
Roger Federer was referring to the time he was turned away from an entrance to Wimbledon by a security guard who did not recognize him and refused him access in 2022. The young retiree, who told the anecdote on the Daily Show set hosted by Trevor Noah last December had obviously never needed a card to enter Wimbledon until then.
“I said to him: No, I don’t have my membership card, but I am a member. I just wonder where I can get in,” Federer said at the time about his “standoff” with the overzealous security guard. “I look at her one last time and say to her: I am very sorry but I have won this tournament eight times, please believe me, I am a member…”
Without success. Roger Federer had to turn back in front of the inflexible security guard, before finding another entrance, where he was this time welcomed with open arms.
