Formula 1 | Ferrari and Mercedes could quickly focus on 2026

Frédéric Vasseur admits Ferrari could “quickly” focus on the 2026 season during the first part of 2025.

2025 is the final year of the current technical regulatory period, with teams having been allowed to begin aerodynamic development work for the all-new 2026 rules since January 1.

This makes the upcoming season unique, with even top teams possibly deciding to focus more intensely on 2026 at an early stage.

In Ferrari’s case, Vasseur admits it will depend on whether the team is a real title contender.

“I believe that from the start of 2025 we will have to share our time and resources between the two programs. Inevitably, the results of the first series of races in 2025 will determine how we proceed from there.”

“If we realize that we have little to gain or lose this season, we will quickly focus all our efforts on the 2026 project.”

“But if we are fighting for the title, we will have to dedicate a significant number of hours per week to the development of the 2025 car.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has the same approach.

“I think most teams will choose to shift the majority of their resources to the new 2026 cars fairly early on, but it will be back and forth for a few months.”

“I think everything will fall into place as it should in the first few races, but I’m not sure we’ll see much improvement after the summer.”
